DENTON & COOK - HONG KONG BEAT & OTHER BBC TV THEMES LP (1980)

I've been recording a few vinyl items recently and here's the first one to make it's way to the blog. After a few attempts, I finally managed to track down a copy of this LP for a very good price last year.

The LP contains 12 tracks; six BBC TV themes that were all released as singles between 1975-80 and their respective b-sides. Highlights include the supreme spy-funk of 'Quiller' from '75, the 1980 proto-techno update of the 'Tomorrow's World' theme and the glorious shuffling groove of 'The Great Egg Race'.

As a (hopefully) nice little bonus I have also included a couple of extra extended edits with the LP. 'The Great Egg Race' by myself and a great 7+ minute extended version of 'Quiller' by Soundhog. I grabbed it from his Soundcloud page so I hope he doesn't mind!

1 Hong Kong Beat
2 Tomorrow's World
3 Jet Lag
4 The Spangler
5 Quiller
6 Inside Story
7 The Great Egg Race
8 Diamonds In The Sky
9 General Direction
10 Circuit Eleven-Miami
11 Chasing The Dragon
12 Scramble

14 Quiller (Soundhog Extended Edit)

CONTAINER LOVE

To my mild surprise I've already got a brand new mix together and ready to share! 41 minutes of typically PVDG style psych, cosmic electronics, doom laden post-punk and the odd groovy little number. The title is a reference to my recent working environment and work-related accident that have dictated the flow of the last few months in my world.

The mix includes appearances by Haxan Cloak, Edward Artemiev, The Associates, William Shatner, My Solid Ground, Zombi, Peloquin Sauvageau, No UFOs, Jane Weaver & Demdike Stare and Linda Hoyle (from Affinity).

Another mix moving from my Soundcloud to the blog for a more permanent home. Produced as a taster for Umbrelladelika's Bonnefooi gig in June 2011. Action packed psych, worldwide beats and breaks and the like...

ULTRA-NOSTALGISCHE POP

While I'm on the subject of promoting other Amateur Athletics related activity, please keep an eye on the Ultra-Nostalgische Pop blog featuring lush, warped and crunchy electronic music and videos from Filipovic, Cleromancer and 80000. Here's a taste of Filipovic's glorious '125 Years' complete with psyched-out, nausea-inducing downhill bike racing sequences...

THE TRAPPISTS

Not much action on the blog since August but there will be more posts and new mixes at some point in the future. However, I've been pretty busy working as one half of The Trappists and can proudly re-direct you to The Trappists' blogspot where you can enjoy an ever increasing number of tracks, re-edits and DJ mixes. All the music is hosted on The Trappists' Soundcloud page and all tracks/mixes can be downloaded for further entertainment. Hope you like it!

NEW LINKS FOR OLD MIXES

As I mentioned in the previous post, I didn't keep my Rapidshare subscription up-to-date over the last few months so lots of files and their links have disappeared. Fair enough - in my defence, I did move home (to another country) and get a 'proper' job for the first time in a long time.
Anyway, I don't really have the time to tidy up the original posts so here is a list of some new links...

Hopefully some new mixes soon as well.

I LIKE SHORT SONGS II

OK, back once again after another lengthy absence from the blog. In the meantime, due to lapsed Rapidshare subscription, I've lost the links to loads of the mixes. I'm going to deal with that shortly...

...For now we have a new mix - a sequel to the original 'I Like Short Songs' mix from April last year. The process is pretty much the same although the structure of the separate parts is looser. The rules were slightly more generous as well this time with tracks less than 90secs long suitable for inclusion (for the first mix it was 60secs). It's divided into seven parts so it can be dipped in and out of easily enough (though I would suggest that unlike the original it can only be enjoyed whole in the correct running order).

Followers of the blog will surely know by now what sort of sounds and styles to expect!

LIBRARY MIX IV: COLOURSOUNDS

I've been meaning to get this one done for a little while now. The three previous library mixes that I posted last summer have been the most downloaded mixes by some margin. So I'm pleased to present a new volume in the series. Essentially it's more of the same - loads of lively, weird and wonderful music from a variety of classic Library music labels.

AUTUMN MIX 2010

Another multi-genre mix for hungry ears. Unlike this year's Summer Mix there is no seasonal theme to the mix. It's the usual unusual fair with pop and proper songs colliding with with more abstract passages, hopefully creating a satisfying listening experience for those who get involved!

UOVA DI ORO

A portentous title for this recent mix of Italian only progressive and psychedelic music. I've include plenty of the heavy hitters from the Italian 1970's progressive scene as well as a few more avant-garde favourites and some quality psychsploitation action.

SPANISH PIES PART ONE

Ooh, Spanish Pies! A few months ago I was checking out a whole series of compilations called 'Spanish Bizarro'. They are full of wild Spanish obscurities, pop hits and 60's/70's sonic ephemera. So after overdosing on the stuff for an afternoon I decided to bang a quick mix together. This mix is also a kind of continuation of the 'I Like Short Songs' mix theme. There'll be more of those in the future (I still have a Piero Umiliani one that I haven't uploaded yet).

Anyway, back to the pies. It a schizoid mélange (mezcla perhaps?) groovy beats, flamenco pop, adverts, latin vocal histrionics and burping. Oh yes, there's one hell of a burping song. I shared my findings with Memo and he quickly produced a Spanish Pies Part Two - following a smother and sexier path through the Iberian bizarreness. You can check his mix out on his MEMOGRAMMAFON blog.

SEX AND COPS

I am very happy to present a special new mix project I have been producing on and off over the last month or so.

My friend Martin Brass has an exhibition entitled 'Sex & Cops II' starting on Saturday 25th September (further details here). We were discussing it a few months ago and I suggested that it would be good fun to do a mix for the event. It's actually ended up as two different mixes, one for the Sex and one for the Cops! Both mixes clock in around 36 minutes and are packed with relevant sample material and groovy music. Needless to say that the 'Sex' mix in particular contains plenty of material that you might not want to expose impressionable young people to!

I'll be DJing at the Sex & Cops II party in Aalst on Saturday 25th so maybe I'll see you there!

Details and download links below. As I'm doing this post in Belgium and not with my usual set up I've had problems uploading a zip file containing both mixes and artwork. Therefore the two mixes have to be downloaded separately. They are meant to go together so please download them both!

KOSMISCHE DRIFT

Thanks to everyone who's had a little download or two from the blog. I seem to have a steady little trickle of interest in the Amateur Athletics activities to match the steady little trickle of uploads I produce.

I did this mix on the 4th of July and have just got around to knocking up a cover for it and doing the necessary organising and uploading. Been away to the lowlands of Europe for most of the last month so I think this is a fairly fast turn around for me! It was going to be called 'The End of Rationing' (the 4th July 1954, fact fans) but it's a rubbish title with no real relevance to the mix itself. So Kosmische Drift it is - a pretty corny title but a reasonably descriptive one.

Contains 25 tracks, running a few seconds short of an hour, the mix combines plenty of electronic and kosmische artists old and new. Hopefully, some entertaining late night moody fodder to drift off with.

SUNNY SUNSHINE SUMMER MIX 2010

I did this mix in early June when we had the first bout of proper summer heat in the UK. So I thought it was about time I got this one out and about as time is getting on and there are holidays to be had. Almost every track was chosen for it's titular reference to sun and summer. This ensures plenty of proper summer fun as well as a few more abstract sequences for good measure. I've also sprinkled a few field recordings and samples in for the ambience of it all.

Here's the artists listed in order of appearance....

NINO NARDINI & THE POP RIVIERA GROUP

I LIKE SHORT SONGS - ZAPPAMIX

Following on from the full-blown 'I Like Short Songs' mix (posted earlier)
comes the next in a sure-to-continue-sporadically series of mixes following the theme.
The track length was extended out to a lengthy 2:30 for this one. I've stuck to tracks from the 6 or 7 albums that I have. That still provided plenty of variety with Frank's multitude of sonic stylings all represented and a fair spread of bona fide classics buried in amongst it all. Tracklist included if you want to keep up with the proceedings.

320 kbps. 50 tracks. 55:14.

ENOMIX

Pretty self-explanatory this one. A load of Eno tracks from the 70's and 80's
(and a splash of 90's) lobbed together in the customary Gash style. Shortly after I did it
I saw the DJ Food 'Funky Eno Mix' on Soundcloud. I'd certainly recommend that to Eno fans as well. link here

IMAGINATION CAME INTO MY BRAIN

JOHN GOODALL - IMAGINATION CAME INTO MY BRAIN

John's an old colleague of mine from way back who emigrated to New Zealand at the end of the nineties. I hooked up with him again through Facebook so I asked John sometime towards the end of 2009 if he wanted to make a mix for the blog. Sure enough, he sweated away at the height of the Antipodean summer and he delivered the goods during January this year. Finally after a (by now) standard AA delay here it is for your download enjoyment.

John DJs in Wellington on a local radio station - Radio Active 89FM. The show is called The Soul Affair (every Sunday night 9pm-11pm) and as you'd expect treats listeners to sack load of premium quality soul, funk and the like. He's part of the Soul Affair Collective (with 4 others) and they rotate the show each week. You can also check out his Soul Affair blog with posts of his shows available to download.

John's musical interests reach out far wider than that so it was no problem to produce a mix in keeping with the Amateur Athletics principles. Fact fans will note that his excellent feature-length mix is named after a lyric from the Scorpions track - tasty.

Here's John's nice tracklist with annotations!

EASTER BUNFIGHT

EASTER BUNFIGHT MIX - GOOD FRIDAY 2010

A nicely weird beard mix-up for Easter. It's not especially Easter-like
(there's no religious ho-ha for a start) although there are a couple of brief moments to justify the theme. I haven't had time to sort out a tracklist for this one. It may follow, it may not.
It's abstract electronic stuff largely with a few library grooves thrown in. Amongst others there's Richard Pinhas, Monty Python, Pierre Arvay, George Harrison, Omar Khorshid, William Basinski, Moebius and Robin Gibb!

COLDFINGER - 80'S MIX

Well, I was being a bit optimistic a couple of weeks ago when I threatened several posts in one weekend. Nice idea but didn't quite happen. Anyway, we're here now, and this ones a mix of 80's tracks. Sorry no Kajagoogoo this time - maybe the next time. Loads of favourites from back in the day though, with a few more recent discoveries thrown in for good measure.

KOSMISCHE MOUND

Kicking off 2010 with a veritable flurry of activity that will see three
mixes going onto the blog in quick succession (hopefully all this weekend).
First up is another of my mixes. It started out being a typically broad spectrum mix with plenty of rocking tracks but I was really happy with the flow of the first 10 minutes or so and felt
it would be nice to go back and start with the same tracks and go somewhere quite different. The end result is more coherently cosmic and with plenty of friendly faces from cosmic/electronic scenes new and old! Music for some late night head space.

MYSTIC BISCUIT MIX

I'm happy to present the first multi-artist/multi-genre Polle Van De Gash mix for quite some time. Recorded on the 10th November, it's taken me nearly a month to get around to putting the various bits together and get it uploaded. It's business as unusual, a truckload of weird and wonderful tracks mixed and moulded together into a gloriously disorientating and engaging 75 minutes. Rock, psych, library music, electronics, French nutters, Chubby Checker. Well, I hope it's engaging anyway. I'm pretty happy with it so it's tough if your not. You can always drop it in your trash and play some of your usual fare on your iTunes instead. Tidy.

Thanks to everyone that's downloaded some of the stuff on the blog so far. Most downloads are in double figures by now!

It's a pretty big file, 320 kbps. 38 tracks. Running time 75:44.

THE HELDON MIXES

Ah, the mighty Heldon! Fresh from my Human League post a couple of days ago I got the urge to follow it up quickly. So here we have a C90's worth of Heldon action. If you don't know Heldon then I'm not going to fill you in with too much detail. Suffice to say this is seriously heavyweight French prog/RIO music - in turn harsh, cold, abstract, cosmic and intense but always utterly beguiling. I hope I haven't undermined these qualities by botching together these mixes from their varied LPs. Both the mixes are self-contained but intended to flow one after the other for a 95 minute Heldon-megablast! Go on you buggers, see what you think...

THE HUMAN LEAGUE MIX

There's been a bit of a Human League thing going down in my corner of Bethnal Towers recently. I think it started when we were playing 'Black Hit of Space' while testing out K-Dog's 'new-old' amp and speaker combo at his place in Aalst a couple of weeks back. To my mild surprise, my girlfriend (hey zoeteke!) was digging it. So I thought a Human League compilation for her would be in order. The compilation covers the first four albums and I think offers a pretty good selection. However, there's an absence of most of the weird and wonderful instrumental stuff and early works so I thought I'd have a bit of fun with it and generate a new blog post in the process.

By the way, thanks to those of you who've downloaded mixes so far. No one's downloaded the Raj & Rolex album yet though. Go on, don't be shy, give it a try!
